A major earthquake, measured at an 8.6, and powerful aftershock occurred earlier today, hitting off the coast of the Indonesian island of Sumatra. The effect could be felt in countries along the Indian ocean. Early warning systems immediately broadcast tsunami warnings, but the type of earthquake that occurred does not usually generate such powerful waves. Although a large wave did make impact, it hit undeveloped land.
According to the New York Times, there are no reports of major damage or casualties as a result of the earthquake.
